Last month, more than 25 students from across Harris County (eight public school districts, two independent private schools, and three private art and writing schools) stepped onto the stage of Carnegie Hall in New York City as part of the 102nd Scholastic Art & Writing Awards National Ceremony. Against the grand backdrop of this historic venue, these young creators from the Houston area joined nearly 2,800 national medalists from across the country, an achievement stemming from a field of over 310,000 submissions.

Harris County students received an opportunity to explore New York City after the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards National Ceremony.

The evening began with actors Amy Ryan and Anthony Edwards reading award-winning teen writing live, setting the tone for what was to come. Pulitzer and Tony-winning alumnus Branden Jacobs‑Jenkins encouraged the teens to embrace their unique voices and continue shaping the world through the arts. The ceremony culminated with a lively speech from actor and comedian Tracy Morgan, who echoed praise and encouragement for the dedication and creativity of young artists and writers.

At the end of the ceremony, best‑selling author Audrey Niffenegger (The Time Traveler’s Wife) was presented with the Alumni Achievement Award. In her acceptance speech, Niffenegger shared a wish for the students:

“This is what I hope for you: that you will have a life of making art, a life of ideas, and that your time will be yours to create your glorious worlds.”

Harris County students not only stood on one of the most distinguished stages in the world but also carried with them the hopes of a community that celebrates originality, technical mastery and personal vision. Their Carnegie Hall experience was more than a ceremony; it was a powerful affirmation that their voices matter, their visions inspire and their journeys are just beginning.

“I’ve seen firsthand the transformative power of providing space for creativity,” said Chandel Hancock, Harris County Department of Education’s officer of professional learning and student recognition. “Supporting students’ creative endeavors, big or small, helps them discover their voice, build confidence and find community. Celebrating every achievement isn’t just a moment on stage; it’s a signal that their dreams matter and that we believe in their potential to shape the world.”
