Harris County Department of Education (HCDE) leaders and community leaders visited Head Start campuses this week as part of the Real SuperMENtors Read program, enjoying storytime with Harris County’s youngest learners by reading “Dig Dig Digging,” by Margaret Mayo.

As part of the Head Start Significant Male Initiative to bridge together male role models with students, volunteers visit the center and read to classes. Mentors typically read the second Thursday of the month from October through April, but most rescheduled this month as that day (March 13) falls during HCDE’s Spring Break.

Dr. Jesus Amezcua, HCDE assistant superintendent of business services, reads to Compton Head Start students on March 6.

Among those who read to students on March 6 were Dr. Jesus Amezcua, assistant superintendent of business services; Dr. CJ Rodgers, assistant superintendent of education and enrichment; and Jonathan Parker, assistant superintendent for academic support services.

Mentors will read again in April and the initiative will end in May with SuperMENtor celebrations at the respective campuses.
