Harris County Department of Education’s (HCDE) Research and Evaluation Institute (REI) division left a notable impression at the 48th Southwest Educational Research Association Meeting, held Feb. 19-21 in San Antonio.
Three REI coordinators led presentations over the three days.

Dr. Jesus Campos presented research titled, “Beyond the Class: The Influence of Afterschool Programs on Students’ Self-Efficacy.” Using data from students at 10 afterschool sites in Texas, the study evaluates changes in three dimensions of self-efficacy: problem-solving, persistence, and the belief in improvement through effort. It showed significant enhancements in self-efficacy subsequent to participation in the programs.
Jonathan Khandaker explored the integration of AI in educational settings, focusing on usage by teachers and students. Titled, “AI in the Classroom,” the research indicate that even among teachers who actively use AI, opinions on its application vary significantly. Khandaker states further research is essential to understand AI’s impact on teaching and learning.
Aansa Usmani presented a paper titled, “Benefits of Field Supervision on Novice and Pre-Service Teachers: Legislative and District Improvements.” Field experience is a process that pre-service and novice teachers undergo in training. The paper covered literature highlighting the benefits and recommendations, which include transparency and uniform standards.
