During the heart of Teacher Appreciation Week, Harris County Department of Education leaders recognized some of #TeamHCDE’s best for their work and dedication to serving young learners. In separate ceremonies at Highpoint School and Academic and Behavior School East, HCDE leadership surprised Aurick Smither as the 2023-2024 Teacher of the Year and Angela Mitchell as the year’s Educational Aide of the Year.

Dr. Charles Ned, senior director of schools, and division team members joined respective campus representatives to recognize the two winners with a gift basket, flowers and vanity checks. Smither was awarded a $1,000 check sponsored by Imagine Learning, and Mitchell was presented an $1,000 check sponsored by Insights to Behavior.

HCDE has recognized a department-wide Teacher of the Year since 2018. The Educational Aide of the Year honor was added in 2019. The program recognizes educator excellence from HCDE’s four campuses.
