Harris County Department of Education’s Academic and Behavioral School students closed Black History Month in style this week by displaying knowledge, talent and camaraderie. Throughout the month, students researched the rich histories of African American culture, culminating in performing art shows.

A two-day celebration at ABS West included a live wax museum where students dressed up as influential members of the Black community, including President Barack Obama, Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner and Barbara Jordan. On Feb. 29, students participated in a Black history parade through the halls, delivered Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech and performed songs and dances to cultural music.
Across the 610 Loop, life skills classes at ABS East collaborated to create musical instruments highlighting African tribal sounds and modern-day jazz rhythms. At the same time, behavior students showcased their talents by delivering oral histories.
The event, organized by a committee of faculty members led by Administrative Assistant Vanessa Ausley, was heartwarming and well-received by the school community, parents and HCDE leaders.

“The kids get so excited with these performances, and I love to see our non-verbal students participating,” Ausley said. “The kids have worked so hard learning about Black history, from athletes in gym class to famous writers in English. They have worked hard, and I’m proud of them.”
