Head Start’s inaugural Little Chefs, Big Flavors Master Cook Off Competition took parent and student cooking assignments and an annual food science fair and turned them into a celebration of collaboration and learning.
Head Start families and staff came together March 30 to culminate lessons on food and nutrition as well as pit campus-level winners against each other in a division-wide competition.
“Beyond the friendly competition, we hope the Food Science Fair and this finale event inspires families to continue cooking together,” Head Start Senior Director Venetia Peacock said. “These shared experiences spark curiosity, strengthen family bonds and encourage positive attitudes toward healthy foods. Ultimately, we hope this process shows families that learning is both educational and joyful when done side by side.”

Campus winners were originally recognized at a Head Start Policy Council meeting. This new event provides a bigger celebration for their hard work and creativity.
For the competition, families were tasked with picking a fruit or vegetable and constructing a dish or drink. This activity is designed to help young learners develop motor skills such as pouring and stirring, practice basic math when measuring and counting, and experience science as they watch food change during cooking.
Each campus held its own competition, with winners advancing to the cook off. Entries ranged from fresh-squeezed lemonade to stuffed bell peppers and banana bread. HCDE Assistant Superintendent for Academic Support Services Jonathan Parker, Head Start Operations Coordinator Ramona Burton and La Porte Head Start SuperMENtor Robert Smith served as judges, sampling the family concoctions and declaring Dogan’s A’Nyriah Smith (lettuce taco boats) the pre-K winner and Baytown’s Gianni Curi (avocado shrimp cocktail) tops among toddlers.
Harris County Department of Education serves more than 1,300 students through Head Start and Early Head Start centers, providing a safe learning environment that supports growth academically, socially and emotionally.
