Students from Academic and Behavior School East left it all on the field last weekend, collecting two first-place medals and two top-three finishes on March 28 at the Special Olympics meet at Lamar High School in Houston.

David Harrison, a sixth grader from New Caney Independent School District, and Carsen Follis, an eighth grader from Santa Fe ISD, both took home first place for the softball throw. Harrison set the bar at 22.6 meters for his heat, while Follis’ furthest throw stood at 17.5 meters. The pair also went head-to-head in the 50-meter run, where Follis earned second place, with Harrison right on his heels in third place.

Coach Avis Greenleaf helped organize and coach the team, while ABS East staff and members of the Special Schools division attended the event to cheer for competing athletes. Students’ participation in Special Olympics marks progress in their journey to regulate their emotions, overcome classroom challenges and ultimately transition back to their home campuses.
