This Thanksgiving season, Harris County Department of Education’s Special Schools came together on Nov. 21 to make the holidays a little brighter for their students and families. Highpoint School hosted its second annual turkey giveaway, welcoming families to drive through and pick up Thanksgiving meals generously donated by community partners.

At Fortis Academy, staff added an extra touch of cheer by decorating boxes packed with turkeys and filled with feast-day favorites, such as stuffing, macaroni and cheese and more. Students were given the boxes at dismissal to take home to their families. Students at Academic and Behavior School West were given bags full of non-perishable items donated and collected by staff before dismissal for the Thanksgiving break. These giveaways not only help students enjoy a warm holiday meal with loved ones but also alleviate some of the financial stress that can accompany big celebrations. It’s also a joyful reminder of how HCDE campus staff support students both inside and outside the classroom.
