This is Courtney Waters, who turned to education while in college after pursuing a nursing degree that didn’t quite fit. She, found her home and now leads Highpoint School. She knows this life is her calling and as a principal she is a change agent.

Harris County Department of Education celebrates its four campus leaders during National Principals Month, which includes a special video tribute. We also hear from staff members who work alongside them to best serve Harris County learners day in and day out.

Jon-Erik Price, Transition Specialist

“I like how she sets the school culture. She cares about her employees and is always pushing employees to learn new things so they can grow in their careers. That makes the school better off. During my first interaction with her, I could tell that everything was genuine. We don’t treat our kids any different because she is here – her personality and the way she cares about the kids has set the thought process to treat all kids the same whether it was here or their home campus.”

Lori Shortis, Counselor

“I love working with Ms. Waters because she allows us to think outside of the box and come up with ideas for our students. She believes in these kids and believes in the people that she hired to do what’s best for the students. There are so many personalities in this school but I remember Ms. Waters always telling me, ‘Be who you are and there’s nothing wrong with who you are.’ That’s what makes our team the best.”

Really inspiring to see Courtney Waters stepping into leadership and setting the tone for everyone at Highpoint School — her “be who you are” mantra and emphasis on growth for staff and students alike are the kind of culture change we need in schools.
