Special Schools Staff Gain New Insights to Strengthen Instriction and Student Support

Growth never stops when it comes to finding new ways to support students. Members of Harris County Department of Education’s (HCDE) Special Schools division recently traveled to learn from national experts and connect with peers dedicated to improving instruction and student outcomes.

Academic and Behavior School West Teacher Torrey Sheets and Instructional Coaches Courtney Atkinson and Shauntee Johnson attended the i-Ready Impact in Action Summit last week, where they participated in sessions designed to inspire innovation in the classroom. The event focused on bridging gaps in math and literacy using data-driven instruction to elevate learning through the i-Ready platform. The team left energized and equipped with strategies to strengthen instructional practices.

The learning didn’t stop there. HCDE was well represented at the National Alternative Education Association Conference, held Oct. 6-8 in New Orleans. Senior Director of Schools Dr. Charles Ned, Director of Curriculum and Special Services Dr. Margaret Patton and Highpoint Principal Courtney Waters embraced the “Roots and Rhythm” theme that celebrated the heart of alternative education and the educators who bring creativity and compassion to the classroom.
