Sometimes, the best way to recharge your workday is to step away for a moment, whether it’s for lunch or a little quiet time. On Oct. 16, Superintendent James Colbert Jr. welcomed Irvington employees to the 100s to unveil updates on the Irvington renovation project, which began at the end of 2023.

Employees were treated to a light lunch as Colbert shared plans for a new and improved outdoor dining area. Renovations will begin over the winter break and include new flooring, tables and lighting in the garage seating area, next to the elevators. #TeamHCDE can use the space to get fresh air, enjoy lunch and bond with co-workers during breaks. He also announced plans for several food trucks to visit the Department weekly, offering affordable lunch options. The effort will allow employees more relaxation during their breaks and reduce commuting time to local eateries.
Afterwards, attendees were excited to hear about the unveiling of the Rejuvenation Station. In this new quiet space, employees can rest, reset and then return to their day with renewed energy and focus. Colbert shared his expectations for how the space will support staff in finding balance throughout the workday and promote positive mental health. The space features two nap pods that can be reserved during approved scheduled times and two egg chairs designed for quiet time, reflection or meditation. #TeamHCDE was invited to tour the new area before going over the rules of operation for each feature, emphasizing responsible use and respect for colleagues. The new calm corner in the middle of a busy day opened for employees on Oct. 17.

These new and improved spaces are HCDE’s latest investment in caring for people who dedicate themselves to Harris County students and families.
