This is Jatata Hutton, a life-long learner who knows his role as a principal is to champion children and be in their corner. To do this, he pulls from his own experience of others guiding him into the leader he is today.
Harris County Department of Education celebrates its four campus leaders during National Principals Month, which includes a special video tribute. We also hear from staff members who work alongside them to best serve Harris County learners day in and day out.
Donald Jackson, Teacher
“He listens to what we have to say. He’s straightforward and lets you know he doesn’t show favoritism, but he looks out for us. He makes sure that we get what we need and if we have a question and he doesn’t have the answer just then, he’ll find it. He’s the right person here because he’s interested in what’s best for the children. He’s good with us but he wants us to make sure we’re servicing the needs of the students and I think that can be a unique thing. Some people say they’re for the kids, but he’s sincere.
Ann Mustacchia, Teacher
“He’s a very strong leader and I look up to him. He makes quick decisions, especially under pressure. That’s someone to look up and use as model behavior. He never quits on us on rough days, so whenever we are short staffed or have those rough times, we’ll make those alternative plans and he’s always on board with everything. I do appreciate that he listens to his team – teachers and support staff – and is always willing to hear someone out to make sure we’re all successful.”
