Civic Engagement Coordinator Speaks at UH Boot Camp

Harris County Department of Education (HCDE) Civic Engagement Coordinator Avery Spranger served on a discussion panel for the University of Houston’s Civic Engagement Boot Camp, held Sept. 12 at the school’s Law Center.

The daylong workshop focused on voter education and registration, with hands-on activities, mock voting booths and breakout sessions.

Also representing HCDE at the camp were Fall 2025 interns Wilmer Guevara and Maya Wheelwright, and former intern Sandra Teran (Fall 2024). Guevara and Wheelwright will serve with the Civic Engagement team and Education Foundation of Harris County, respectively, during the fall semester as part of the UH Hobby School of Public Affairs’ Civic Houston Internship Program.

Spranger spoke on a “Civic Engagement in Action” panel, joining Katie Campbell Shumway, League of Women Voters of Houston executive director, and Chris Pino, BakerRipley manager of voter engagement.
