Representation matters, especially within the education system. Throughout Hispanic Heritage Month, Harris County Department of Education (HCDE) will highlight some of the Hispanic educators, advocates and leaders who have helped shape the path of learning for millions of students across Texas.
Fortis Academy student Jerry Garza uses his voice to uplift several Latino and Hispanic Americans in a video published by the Department’s Communications and Creative Services division. The video highlights several people, including George Sanchez, a scholar and activist who challenged racially biased testing, and Dorothy Caram, a local educator who organized the first Career & Education Day for minority students in Houston ISD. The video also includes remarks from Dr. Lupita Hinojosa, the first Hispanic female superintendent of Spring ISD, who shares advice in Spanish and English from her father that underscores the importance of education.
Observed annually from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15, Hispanic Heritage Month recognizes the invaluable contributions of the vibrant histories, traditions and values of people whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America. HCDE is proud to join the nation in celebrating Latino and Hispanic Americans’ lasting impact on society.
