Harris County Department of Education (HCDE) leaders and community partners continued their visits to Head Start centers this month, reading to the county’s youngest learners and cultivating those relationships as the school year closes.
SuperMENtors is part of the Head Start Significant Male Initiative, bridging together male role models with students. Mentors typically read the second Thursday of the month from October through April. This month’s book is “How Do Dinosaurs Go to School?” by Jane Yolen and Mark Teague.

Many volunteers read this week, including Superintendent James Colbert Jr., assistant superintendents Jonathan Parker and Dr. Jesus Amezcua, and community partners Raul Zavaleta (Harris County Public Health) and Richard Gomez (Lakeshore Learning). Each campus will work with its mentors, as needed, for scheduling reading dates.
In May, Head Start centers will recognize their mentors through special celebrations and events. These connections help make SuperMENtors a success as it closes in on 20 years of service.
