Whether it came before Harris County Department of Education’s (HCDE) Spring Break or after, numerous Department and community leaders visited Head Start campuses in throughout March as part of the Real SuperMENtors Read program.
As part of the Head Start Significant Male Initiative to bridge together male role models with students, volunteers visit the centers and read to classes. Mentors typically read the second Thursday of the month from October through April, though each campus works with its mentors, as needed, for scheduling the actual reading dates.

This month, the second Thursday fell on March 13. HCDE facilities were closed for Spring Break so mentors rescheduled their reading dates. March’s book is “How Do Dinosaurs Go to School?” by Jane Yolen and Mark Teague.
HCDE Superintendent James Colbert Jr. and Board Trustee Dr. John McGee were among those who read to students this week. April 10 is the final reading date while students and Head Start centers will celebrate their SuperMENtors in May.
