Harris County Department of Education (HCDE) Director of Construction Joe Carreon volunteered  to be Coolwood Head Start’s SuperMENtor at the first opportunity. The newest Head Start campus welcomed students on Jan. 21, more than 30 months after HCDE began construction and a journey that included various delays.

Carreon was eager to read to the young learners at their home campus and finally got the chance Feb. 13. He joined other HCDE and community leaders in visiting Head Start centers and reading to some of Harris County’s youngest learners. Carreon had previously read at the former Pugh Head Start until Coolwood opened.

SuperMENtors is part of the Head Start Significant Male Initiative, bridging together male role models with students. Mentors typically read the second Thursday of the month from October through April. February’s book is “I Am Not a Chair!” by Ross Burach.

These connections have helped make SuperMENtors a success as it closes in on 20 years of service.
