Not much is better than a home-cooked meal, and that is exactly what students at Academic and Behavior School West experienced on Feb. 6. Educators teamed up to host a vibrant array of history entitled “Black Heritage Cookout: A Taste of Our Roots,” where middle and high school students learned about the rich flavors and background of Black culture through food. There was something for everyone, from cornbread and collard greens to jerk chicken or sweet potato pie. Attendees could then wash it all down with a taste of sweet tea or red drink. The event is one of many ways students and educators throughout Harris County Department of Education celebrate Black History Month.
