HCDE Superintendent James Colbert Jr. and other HCDE and community leaders visited Head Start campuses this week as part of the Real SuperMENtors Read program, enjoying storytime with some of Harris County’s youngest learners by reading “I Am Not a Chair!” by Ross Burach.
As part of the Head Start Significant Male Initiative to bridge together male role models with students, volunteers visit the centers and read to classes. Mentors typically read the second Thursday of the month from October through April, though each campus works with its mentors, as needed, for scheduling the actual reading dates.

Colbert read at Dogan Head Start on Feb. 5, while Dr. CJ Rodgers, assistant superintendent of Education and Enrichment, read at Channelview Head Start on Feb. 6.
It’s connections like these that make SuperMENtors a success as it closes in on 20 years of service. Students as young as 3 years old connect with their mentors and can’t wait to see them each month.
