Before troubleshooting technology challenges and training Harris County Department of Education (HCDE) employees on the latest programs, Raechel Mozer taught the next generation how to master the precision of a chef’s knife, the chemistry of baking and the timing needed to create a perfect dish.

Now, instead of recipe books and kitchen timers, her tools are software programs and training modules. The goal remains the same – helping others gain confidence in their skills, whether in the kitchen or behind a keyboard.

“I love it when I see that light bulb go off,” said Mozer, HCDE’s February Employee of the Month. “When someone struggling finally gets it and you can see that smile on their face, that’s the prize right there.”

February Employee of the Month Raechel Mozer is HCDE’s first technology trainer. She supports employees by developing training curricula, leading workshops and creating step-by-step guides for complex technical processes.

Mozer always wanted to teach, but it wasn’t until a summer camp experience that solidified her dreams. She witnessed firsthand how learning to cook could empower young people to develop healthier eating habits, enjoy fine dining and explore a variety of cultural cuisines.

“I wasn’t taught how to cook growing up, and I thought if I had been, that might have made a huge difference in my experience with food,” she recalled. “I wanted to teach students or kids like me at that time how to cook and eat healthier.”

She earned a bachelor’s degree in family consumer sciences while working as an academic advisor at Texas State University. Encouraged by her peers to continue her instruction, she entered the education technology graduate program.

What began as an interest in integrating technology into her lesson plans quickly became necessary as the coronavirus pandemic shut down in-person classes. Mozer worked as a culinary arts instructor at Spring Independent School District when she had to pivot her lesson plans and teach students remotely.

“I thought I was going be able to teach my kids how to cook from home, but it was a liability for the district,” she said. “I had to get creative and made my entire class through Schoology with videos and pictures. I also helped my kids build digital portfolios to show off the dishes they made. Even though I was focusing on nutrition and culinary, technology was always in the back of my mind.”

Added Taneeka Henderson, HCDE Information Technology Services (IT) project manager: “Raechel will just take off with an idea. That’s how she works! People may say, ‘Oh, she’s just doing her job.’ No, she goes above and beyond.”

In 2023, the Houstonian brought her passion to HCDE, hitting the ground running as the Department’s first technology trainer. She supports employees by developing training curricula, leading workshops and creating step-by-step guides for complex technical processes.

“We envisioned the position to be a way to empower our employees to be more excited about technology,” IT Director Chris Hoesel said. “It would also enable us to find new ways to communicate what IT does for the Department and how to utilize the tools we provide.”

She doesn’t just coordinate training but builds it from the ground up. Mozer crafts accessible lessons that make intimidating systems feel approachable. Whether she discusses best practices for Microsoft applications during her bi-weekly lunch and learn sessions or provides insight into the Department’s in-house software or new digital platforms, Mozer takes pride in breaking down technical concepts in ways that make sense.

“That’s part of the beauty of having Raechel,” Hoesel said. “She’s a teacher who knows how to get an idea across to where people understand it, and she does it with the creative freedom that brings a level of humanity to our industry.”

Her ability to connect with employees of all technical backgrounds sets her apart. The IT guru thrives on working with those who may feel intimidated by technology.

“Working with people at various levels of experience keeps me on my toes, but I don’t expect everyone to know everything,” Mozer smiled. “I think something we all have in common is we’re lifelong learners, and when I come across someone vulnerable enough to say, ‘Hey, I don’t know anything about this, I don’t know how to use it,’ I enjoy working with those people who need a little bit more direction.”

Henderson described the February Employee of the Month as a “rock star” who will stop at nothing to aid educators and staff.

“Raechel has developed a lot of training for the Special Schools division,” Henderson described. “She has created several curriculums for their new staff and even led training sessions where she’s stayed until 6 o’clock. These are trainings outside of her regular work schedule where she’s agreed to say, ‘Yes, I’m willing to lend myself to helping you guys grow and be better.’”

Mozer’s work impacts the students and families that HCDE serves by equipping educators with the digital tools and knowledge to create engaging lessons that resonate with students.

“Students are constantly on a device,” she said. “If teachers can incorporate that into their lesson plans with games or brain breaks, it will only reinforce what students are learning. They will be more engaged and enjoy what they are doing.”

Beyond her efforts as a trainer, the Department’s mission to advocate for all learners—especially those at Fortis Academy – holds personal significance for Mozer. She lost her younger sister to addiction and knows the importance of supporting teens who may need a second chance.

“I think if my younger sister would have known about our recovery program, she may have still been with us today,” an emotional Mozer said. “I feel like sometimes those students feel like nobody cares, and I think that only furthers their addiction. I truly love that HCDE is there for all students, not just those performing well but those who may need help performing at all.”

Mozer described herself as “lucky” to work for an organization that aligns with her personal and professional ethos. Despite her expertise, she approaches her role humbly and eager to learn.

“Technology is ever-changing, so I’m always learning,” she said. “Whenever I think I know something, the app changes or updates. It’s just part of my role to be patient, reflect constantly and learn so I can teach that information to everyone else.”

From the kitchen to the training room, the February Employee of the Month’s passion for teaching has never wavered – a constant for which we can all be grateful.

“I can’t imagine that there’s anyone at HCDE that Raechel’s work has not impacted,” a heartfelt Henderson said.
