Each January, school districts across the nation celebrate the dedication of school board trustees for their commitment to students. This year’s School Board Recognition Month theme is “Leadership for Tomorrow’s Texas,” which highlights trustees’ dedication to creating meaningful educational experiences and opportunities that prepare students for college, careers and beyond.
Superintendent James Colbert Jr. spoke about the impact of our trustees during his opening remarks.
“So much of what we have here at HCDE is a byproduct of the decisions this board makes,” said Colbert. “They are the ones who are always thinking about and advocating for the children we serve. I pulled some stats, and they’ve spent exactly 3,397.8 minutes advocating for HCDE, and we could not be more grateful for their time.”

During the reception, attendees saw a video highlighting the Department’s gratitude for the board, and trustees were presented with certificates of appreciation, customized coolers and handwritten thank-you cards from HCDE staff. Students in our Special Schools division also poured their creativity into personalized gifts. Academic and Behavior Schools presented artwork, Highpoint School created personalized office supplies, and Fortis Academy utilized their culinary skills to provide delicious snacks.
During the lunchtime event, attendees had an opportunity to mingle with HCDE trustees while enjoying light bites and refreshments.
