Hundreds of professionals dedicated to serving students in an environment other than a traditional educational setting gathered in Tucson, Ariz. for the National Alternative Education Association Conference (NAEA) on Oct. 7-9. More than 40 people attended sessions led by Fortis Academy and Highpoint School principals Travita Godfrey and Courtney Waters where they shared their expertise in alternative education.
Fortis Academy and Highpoint School principals Travita Godfrey and Courtney Waters shared their expertise in alternative education during their individually led sessions. Godfrey detailed the art of maintaining a positive school climate while fostering individual growth and responsibility. Waters encouraged educators to change their response to student behavior and use student-focused programs to engage with them on their level.
More than 40 people attended each session, including Harris County Department of Education’s Assistant Superintendent for Academic Support Services Jonathan Parker and Special Schools Senior Director Dr. Charles Ned. Leaders mingled with attendees while participating in interactive activities that presented various scenarios where educators could implement new-found strategies.
