Head Start and School-Based Therapy Services recently held their annual returning staff orientations and professional development sessions as employees gear up for the 2024-2025 academic year.

On Aug. 7-8, more than 150 occupational (OT), physical (PT) and music therapists (MT) gathered at the North Post Oak office to review compliance updates and training on new IT resources. Division leaders also highlighted legal and licensure updates to ensure staff and student safety when providing therapeutic services across Harris County districts. Senior Director Carie Crabb encouraged a rejuvenated staff to share ideas and best practices with others before returning to their districts. Crabb also reinforced her promise to support therapists with professional development opportunities throughout the school year.

The race to a successful school year began for early childhood educators on Aug. 9 in the Irvington Conference Center. The annual back-to-school event hosts Head Start and Early Head Start staff from all campuses, including teachers, teaching assistants, campus managers, cooks, custodians, administrative staff and executive leadership. This year’s rally embraced a track and field theme as attendees gathered for a day of fellowship. Many donned matching sweatsuits and tennis shoes as they participated in group discussions and collaborative activities.

Head Start Senior Director Venetia Peacock closed the day by discussing changes within the division, updating staff on capital improvement projects and sharing her goals for the upcoming school year. Dogan and Fonwood Head Start campuses celebrated their first day of school on Monday, Aug. 12. HCDE’s remaining Head Start and Early Head Start campuses return to classes on Aug. 26.
