#TeamHCDE Celebrates its 2023-2024 Adult Education Graduates

Family members waited in anticipation, cameras pulled out ready to capture priceless moments, as smiles filled the Irvington Conference Center on June 22.

In the hallway – outfitted in red from head to toe – stood the stars of the day.

Each had his or her own story; their own challenges and journey to reach this goal.

Graduation Day.

And when the moment came for graduates to enter the room to the strains of “Pomp and Circumstances,” the audience was ready with claps, cheers and dozens of photos. The celebration was on!

On Saturday, June 22, Harris County Department of Education celebrated more than 100 Adult Education students who earned their high school equivalency diplomas (HSE), formerly known as GED, during the 2023-2024 school year.

“To my fellow graduates, never doubt what you can achieve no matter the age or circumstances,” said 2024 Adult Education GED Teacher of the Year Dr. Jackiethsha Fluellen-Lake, reading motivational words on behalf of graduate Anayanzint Urtes Juarez, who could not attend. “We all have our unique journeys and challenges, but with perseverance and support, we can overcome them. Look around at your classmates and know that you are part of a community that believes in second chances and new beginnings.”

Juarez began her journey toward her HSE diploma at 44 years old. Like many others, she had a family and other responsibilities. Her daughter was starting high school, so she wanted to be an example. If Juarez could do it, her daughter could too.

“My kids saw my studying late at night and trying to master those awful fractions,” read Fluellen-Lake.  “[My teacher] saw a spark in my eyes and helped it shine again. I’m here because my family believed in me and supported me every step of the way.”

This was the second year for the in-person ceremony since 2019 and the room was packed as the number of graduates and their guests doubled from last year. Many teachers also attended the ceremony, catching up with students before the ceremony and congratulating them afterward.

During the ceremony, attendees heard from honor graduates Brayon Donahue and Ruth Alarcon, who led the invocation and Pledge of Allegiance, respectively.

Assistant Superintendent for Academic Support Services Jonathan Parker delivered the commencement address.

“Graduates, your journey to this point has been nothing short of remarkable,” he said. “Your presence here today is a testament to your resilience and determination. Today, we celebrate not just the completion of your courses, but the countless hours of study, late nights and sacrifices you made to reach this milestone.

“You have demonstrated the power of lifelong learning and shown that it is never too late to pursue your dreams.”

Following the speeches, it was time to cheer again. Family members shouted out as each graduate crossed the stage. Finally, it was time to turn their tassels and move onto the next adventure in life.

“Congratulations to the Class of 2023-2024,” said Master of Ceremonies and HSE Program Manager Bill Medina. “We wish you well graduates and best of luck.”
