Harris County Department of Education joins organizations and school districts nationwide in celebrating Juneteenth, a significant day in American history. It marks the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in Texas on June 19, 1865.

Recognized as a federal holiday by President Joe Biden in 2021, Juneteenth is a time to reflect on our history, celebrate our freedom and honor the rich contributions of African Americans to our nation.

On Wednesday, a video highlighting the history and stories of resilience within the Black community was posted on HCDE’s social media pages. Through our efforts to honor African American culture, we are reminded of the progress that’s been made and the work that still lies ahead.
