Students from our Special Schools division recently went on an exciting journey beyond the classroom walls. Their destination? Local college campuses, where dreams meet potential realities.

Students from HCDE’s Fortis Academy take a tour of Texas Southern University on April 4, 2024.

Fortis Academy students soaked in the vibrant atmosphere at Texas Southern University, mingling with students and professors passionate about education. A student representative led the group through campus, visiting lecture halls, the library and dormitories. Harris County learners asked questions about the admission process and gained insight into the available degree plans.

On the east side of Houston, high schoolers from Highpoint School stepped on the San Jacinto Community College campus for a career exploration event. More than a dozen students received an opportunity to speak with campus administrators and employers from various industries, including healthcare, aerospace, construction and computer science. Students learned about collegiate programs offered by San Jac and how they lead to industry jobs. Following the event, students participated in a campus tour designed as a scavenger hunt.

Whether students plan to continue their education or enter the workforce immediately, our educators are committed to helping students envision their lives beyond HCDE.
