Students from various HCDE Head Start locations recently observed Week of the Young Child, a fun-filled event celebrating early learning, young children, their teachers and families through colorful and creative activities.

Channelview embraced the sweet life by creating freshly squeezed lemonade in a nutritional lesson highlighting flavor and textures. The 3-to 5-year-olds explored various mediums and patterns on Artsy Wednesday while crafting classroom murals and t-shirts with paint and chalk.

Assistant Superintendent of Education and Enrichment Dr. CJ Rodgers visited with Channelview students on Thursday as part of the Real SuperMENtors Read program. The class explored rhymes with Margaret Wise Brown’s story of children exploring the seasons of a year in “Sunshine and Snowballs.”

Campuses rounded out the week by inviting families to participate in an art show. Fifth Ward educators encouraged students to study various modes of transportation, which culminated in a showcase of hand-crafted vehicles, including trucks and buses.

Activities are aligned with early childhood curriculum to promote problem-solving, creative thinking, health, nutrition and parent involvement.

Harris County Department of Education has began accepting enrollment applications to its Head Start program for the 2024-2025 school year. Families can view a map of campus locations and apply at hcde-texas.org/head-start.
