Highpoint Students Explore Future Possibilities at Annual Teen Summit

On March 28, more than 100 students at Highpoint School participated in the school’s annual Teen Summit, an all-day event featuring presentations and speakers from local universities and schools, organizations and businesses.

Attendees were also treated to a keynote address from Byron Lofton, a Houston-based tattoo artist and business owner. Lofton shared his journey to open the day, which included some of the same adversity as many Highpoint students. Lofton, owner of 290 Ink, encouraged students to make positive decisions that will put them on a path to success.

“You’re still young. You still have a chance,” Lofton said. “Life is the best teacher. This may not reach everyone, but I hope I reach a few of you.”

Following the keynote, students rotated through seven sessions. In total, the self-empowerment summit, which was designed to provide students with future career opportunities, featured 24 different presenters.

Among the businesses and organizations middle school participants were able to meet with were Xplosive Athletics, Young Kings Mentoring and Crush City Innovations.

High School summit attendees were able to meet with business representatives from Euphoric Salon, Intent to Launch Leadership Institute and more.

Additionally, representatives from the U.S. Army, the City of Houston and Universal Technical Institute also attended the summit. Students interested in the medical field had an opportunity to speak with a licensed professional counselor, clinical psychologist and first responders.

Highpoint School offers adjudicate youth in grades 6-12 a safe and highly structured learning environment. The school has a low student-to-teacher ratio and gives students the skills needed to succeed in both academic and social settings. For more information, visit the school’s website.
