ABS West Staff Use Dialogue to Address Educator Burnout

ABS West staff came together earlier this week to help support each other and find solutions to the topic of burnout in education. Using the Socratic method, a form of open-ended dialogue based on critical thinking and asking questions, the seminar looked to identify causes and start developing strategies for teachers and staff members during the hour-long session that closed with door prizes and refreshments.
Principal Jatata Hutton thanked ABS West staff who initially came to him with the idea. He was on board from the start, and expressed his gratitude for an event that will help shift the culture moving forward.

The seminar began with staff reviewing the results from an online anonymous survey. In addition to breaking down staff demographics, questions and discussion ranged from preparedness levels to support from administration and other departments.
Staff then took a deeper dive. In an open discussion, staff members shared their personal experiences during the school year and how each felt supported in his or her specific role. Staff shared specific strategies for their challenges and acknowledged others for serving as mentors and sounding boards.

“Our campus is truly moving toward achieving great things for our students and staff because of your commitment to connect and collaborate to make a difference,” Hutton wrote to staff members. “Today was a big step toward supporting each other in all areas as we focus on getting it done with grit and excellence!”
