On Thursday, the Center for Afterschool, Summer and Enrichment for Kids (CASE for Kids) and the City of Houston celebrated the 10th anniversary of City Connections, a program supporting nonprofits that provide afterschool activities in each of the 11 city council districts. To mark the occasion, city leaders presented an official proclamation from Mayor John Whitmire recognizing March 7, 2024, as CASE for Kids Day.

Harris County Department of Education Board of Trustees President Andrea Duhon, Second Vice President David Brown, Trustee Eric Dick, Chief of Staff Danielle Bartz and Senior Director Dr. Lisa Caruthers accepted the honor during a reception at City Hall. The event welcomed more than 50 grantees to receive certificates of recognition and an opportunity to network with leaders.  

“Our City Council Members are creating a space to invest in a wide range of services that support students. That’s key to CASE for Kids,” Caruthers said. “Houston is evolving, and I hope the City Connection program continues to grow with it.”  

Funding for the City Connections project is provided by the City of Houston and administered by CASE for Kids. In 2023-2024, the Department received a total of 68 applications requesting funding. Council Members awarded up to $45,000 each in funding for programs in their districts that provide a safe and inclusive environment and diverse learning opportunities.
