On Thursday, Jan. 27, people of all ages took time out of their busy schedules to show their appreciation during national “Thank Your Mentor Day.” The day, which occurs during National Mentoring Month, is reserved for giving thanks to all the individuals who provide guidance, advice, and encouragement to young people.

C. E. King Middle School student Ulises Ramirez has big goals for himself, including securing admission to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

“I want to learn how computers work—how to fix them, how to build them—so I can either repair them or make new technology,” said Ramirez. “I really want to shoot to get a scholarship because tuition there is like $54,000 [per year].”

Undaunted by his ambitions, the sixth-grade techie says he has CASE for Kids afterschool program site coordinator Marc Gallegos to thank for connecting him with valuable opportunities.

Since learning of Ramirez’s college aspirations during “table topics” or small group discussions, Gallegos has worked to find research and experiential learning activities to support Ramirez’s pursuit of a career in technology, including reintroducing robotics to the program. Gallegos plans to incorporate robotics activities following spring break and build up to CASE’s 2023 All-Earth Ecobot Challenge Day.

Of all the lessons Gallegos has taught him, Ramirez says the one that sticks in his mind is “never giving up” on his dreams.
