Current Harris County Department of Education Special Populations Director Darlene Breaux will head the Research and Evaluation Institute as its new director.

Breaux joined HCDE in 2016 to oversee continuing professional learning opportunities for teachers who educate students served through special population programs.

“Being the director of special populations has allowed me to work closely with many of the 25 school districts which HCDE serves,” Breaux said. “Having this relationship allowed me to better understand district needs and how the Research and Evaluation Institute can provide information and resources that are supported by research.”

One of her goals as leader is to deliver small, educator friendly highlights and summaries of current research being published through her division.
Breaux, a resident of Alief, is a national trainer, former principal and special services coordinator who has 20 years of service in education. She holds a bachelor’s degree from Texas Southern University with teacher certifications in ESL and special education. She also earned a master’s in educational management with principal certification from the University of Houston Clear Lake. She is currently earning her doctorate degree in instructional leadership from Abilene Christian University.

Breaux served as Miss Texas Southern University in 1990-1991. She is a member of Kappa Delta Pi National Honor Society and is active in the Alief community as a board member for the Alief YMCA. In addition, she is the former special services coordinator in Alief Independent School District.

Breaux is married and has three children.
