For the past three months, Bell has been voluntarily tutoring adult learners in the HCDE GED program. As the HCDE network analyst and storage administrator, Bell specializes in math, a subject in which many students struggle.
“I know the issues people have with math,” said Bell, “so I saw an opportunity to help out.”
The additional tutoring helps students pass their GED tests and ultimately take advantage of better job opportunities. Current GED student Kimberly Schleisser, who has been working with Bell for a month, appreciates his ability to easily break down math problems.
“The tutoring is helpful because he covers everything in detail to make sure we completely understand the material,” said Schleisser.
Bell also feels connected to the adult learners he tutors in several ways. His mother teaches GED and ESL classes at Lonestar College, so he is familiar with the program. More specifically, in 2015 he attended the University of Houston and received his bachelor’s degree at the age of 43, so he understands firsthand the determination it takes to go back to school later in life.
“I volunteer to tutor because I understand what they’re going through,” explained Bell. “It’s also important to me as an employee of HCDE because it’s another way I can help further the goals of our organization.”
Those interested in volunteering can call the HCDE Adult Education division at 713-692-6216 and ask for Eduardo Honold, director of Adult Education.
